On The Wings Of A Song......
This was a legendary tribute mural to Miles Davis…. on the wings of a song ….. and was part of the extraordinary street art life of Newtown at a particular time. And thats me lounging about on someone else’s gold Rolls Royce…. This car has made an appearance in a few of my photo’s most notabley Spirt of Sydney!
The car belonged to a Mr Tony Spanos Esq who owned and operated the Graffitti Hall of Fame in Alexandria in gritty industrial inner city Sydney…... One of the most eccentric and amazingly arts focused multi millonares I’ve ever met thats for sure….. King of Doof and lover of Graffitti and all around champion of the arts especially if it was a bit cheeky…...
Anyway when Newtown started to get a bit gentrifyed a few years back the tidy town people painted it out despite it being one of the most popular and enduring murals around at the time….. such a shame….

hey thanks guys and yes I’m so glad I have the photo…. I never left home with out a camera in my hand in those day…..actually not much has changed in that regard… and there might be one or two more shoots of murals including one that the tidy towners just won’t touch as its so beloved…... illegal but wonderful….:) so stay tuned people…...

Out and out knuckle-scrapping contempt, painting over that beautiful bit of work. Ya just have to shake your head in amazement. Just where do those foul individuals come from, the people who time and time again screw over urban gems? Seems they decide on a “lifestyle” change by moving from twee outrageously over-priced suburbs and target places that generated an energy and aesthetic through the efforts of people who are the antithesis of them. They lob, thrilled to the back of their whitened teeth,that their have bought themselves some cultural cache. Only to quickly try and turn their funkytown victim into the putrid suburban cultural wasteland they oozed from in the first place!

hey tell me about it… and you know what… they painted the damned wall ….BEIGE….so unattractive and now it’s all covered in ugly tags and dog piss… so criminal… this particular mural was legendary and now it’s no more… I tell you what I think people who paint out homages to Miles Davis should be locked up in padded cell with nothing to listen to but … Kind of Blue…. till they bloody well get it…. cheers Col… your a legend yourself….:)

and hey if you look really really closely you can see the tee shirt I’m wearing is the What has God done for you today Honey? one that I’ve just reworked and posted….. ahh back in the day when that sort of thing was just the thing to wear…..:)
