graffitti house newtown

just for something totally different…. a snap of a tiny house somewere in Newtown in Sydney and it completely covered in graffiti…. which is not so strange in this part of town. Random urban beautification squads roam the streets looking for shabby inner city terraces to tidy up with some street art. I love that about Newtown. :)

LOL re : ‘urban beautification squads’. If I had (could afford) a house, I think I could almost appreciate somebody improving it like this. Great photo – the colours are amazing

Thanks everybody…. in this very vibey inner city suburb there are lots of little houses like this one. People who own the last terrace in a row either commission or are approached by artists both traditional and street for the privilage of painting it out. As you can see is a very tiny house and would have only taken a day or so to paint. The interesting thing about this phenomena is that by commisioning a mural on an exposed side of a house it then proctects those walls from random graffitti attacks and ugly tagging. So every body wins. The home owners get the cache of having some original art work improving the property values and the artists get a high visiblity canvas to work on …. So its all good.

Julee: Great photograph of what I’d prefer to label as “ghetto calligraphy.” I used to be in a tag-gang bakk in Los Angeles in the early-mid 1990’s.

Hi PHILLIPEDOAN great to get your comment. Interesting that you used to be in a tag gang but the image above is more of a mural that being about tagging or even just about calligraphy. And Newtown is a bit rundown and scruffy but its not a ghetto either. The artist and the home owner have agreed on the design and also a fee for its excecution so in many ways its a mural that comes out of the culture of graffite street art rather than being the ‘real’ thing.

Its still pretty though. If I had a little house like this I’d get it painted like this as well. :)
