Madonna and child mural Newtown
another old mural from the vaults… this was quite a contentious painting at the time and attracted quite a bit of vitriol …. it’s located on Erskinville road and although it’s still in existence a dirty big house got built on the empty block along side it so you can’t see it any more… probably a good thing as it got badly flamed and nastily tagged by various factions arguing the abortion question with paint and stuff …. shame really as I always liked this one and it was never meant it to be the site of a war….. still I guess the control of womens bodies has always been problematic for some in the community …..

thanks ding… it’s a record of art history in a lot of ways… it’s sad that these murals are no longer around… I’m really glad I”ve got photo’s of them….. cheers….:)
Andrew Makowi...
What an awesome painting and the size of it. It must feel really great to make a work of art this big. It seems a shame that stuff like this is not preserved.
Juilee Pryor replied
hi Andy… yes indeed painting to this sort of scale is an art in itself for sure…. but hey it’s worth it to step back and look at something like this and know it’s a gift for everyone who looks at it…. cheers…. really glad you like this old thing…...:)

Did that predate the orphanage thing in Malawi?
Oh sorry – wrong Madonna.
Juilee Pryor replied
oh you are bad !!! but yes indeed it did… I think she was still wearing those pointy bra’s when this was painted…..:)
Wendi Donaldson

Juilee Pryor replied

Mel Brackstone
Fabulous that you caught it before it was damaged and then covered up!
Juilee Pryor replied
hiya Melly …. it was a very exciting time and great to be involved in stuff like this… and I have photo’s of all the damage and the flame wars and the whole damned nine yards of it but no point posting them…. it’s interesting to the interested but not really to anyone else….really glad you had a sqizz though…. the past hey…..:)
