How eerie – if you didn’t know Sydney was being covered in orange dust they would be complimenting you on your treatment!
    Scary stuff! Chookas! ♥

  • Juilee Pryor replied

lol…yes indeed… honestly the most extraordinary things just are too wacky to fake most times… the colour of this dust storm this morning was just unbelievable…. and all these shots I’m posting are straight from the camera…. no tweaking at all… I mean what could you do to it to make it stranger?

  • Robert Knapman

    Robert Knapman

I know, I woke up this morning and the entire house was drenched in yellow…and it was chilly…its very freaky

  • Juilee Pryor replied

hi Robert… this is so weird… the wind is building up to some sort of matching afternoon event at the moment as well… this is shaping up to be the sort of day where you just stay indoors and hope for the best…. there is dust in my mouth and nose and on all the window sills… and I think I could possibly grow something on the bonnet of my car it’s so coated with dust….. very very freaky…...

  • Hans Kawitzki

    Hans Kawitzki

    Wow,what a show for photographers,brilliant capture

  • Juilee Pryor replied

hi Hans and thanks… it was a very fine show for those with cameras but I’m thinking that parents of kids with asthma and suchlike would be really worried by now…. it’s horrible having this dust on your skin and up your nose etc

  • Mel Brackstone

    Mel Brackstone

We had lovely blue skies with clouds till around 10.30…..cos I was shooting dawn with a class…..but around mid morning it turned yellow, just like this…now it’s brown….pretty horrible to watch, actually!

  • Juilee Pryor replied

it’s pretty exciting for a little while while your taking photo’s but it gets pretty horrible quite fast to be honest… it’s icky and there is damned dust everywhere…. I want it to all go back to Broken Hill or SA now…. thanks all the same but no thanks….

  • Mel Brackstone

    Mel Brackstone

I’m hoping it blows over quickly….has it gone from there yet?

  • Juilee Pryor replied

kind of…. the dust storm proper has gone of to Qld but it dropped some much dust every where and now there are some serious gale force winds doing there damnest to get going so all the dropped dust is just swirling around and around… the weather is remarkably peculiar today that is for sure…. and also…. the dust doesn’t taste very nice…..icky and sticky… lucky I got out early and took some pretty pictures or I really would be cranky with it…. ( subtext: that means I’m not currently going to wage war on Broken Hill but if they don’t come and get all there damned dust back I may revise that statement…..:) )

  • Mel Brackstone

    Mel Brackstone

We’ve had the gale force winds all day, both in front of and with all the dust. Hopefully Broken Hill will come get it back! Surely they need it more than we do!

  • Juilee Pryor replied

indeed I reckon so too… I mean there has to be about 5 kilo’s of it just on my car…..!...... and they can come by and collect any old time they like….. :)

  • Linda Ridpath

    Linda Ridpath

ooooh err!!!! great shot again tho!!

  • Juilee Pryor replied

thanks Linda and the dust was really tedious but I’m really pleased that I got some shots of it while it was all happening…..:)

  • DesImages

    DesImages

This is in one sense beautiful, but it’s also bizarre and scary. Great shot!

  • Juilee Pryor replied

hi there Deslmages….. and I know what you mean… I woke just after six and my bedroom was just all filled with bright pink light like something out of a scifi movie or something and I just got up and grabbed the camera and headed for the beach where I was lucky enough to be able to get off a series of shots of this…. and your right… on the one hand it is really beautiful and mysterious….. but…. big but…. it’s really bizarre and scary….. the light was just so weird…. and the dust was so …. well so dusty…....:)

  • Linda Ridpath

    Linda Ridpath

  • Juilee Pryor replied

hi there CapturedByKylie and thanks heaps… that is so nice of you….. and the homepage looks really cool….all those different shades of red and orange through to pink….. and what an amazing and weird event hey…..... thanks again and well done to you too for your feature…..:)

  • CapturedByKylie

    CapturedByKylie

It was a very weird and eerie event this morning, that’s for sure. I was told the sky was blood red between 4-5am, but i didn’t get out of bed until 6am so missed the “best of it”.
The dust has now gone, leaving behind it’s blanket of dust which is still covering everything it possibly can and the strong winds which have been around most of the afternoon/evening.
I heard on the news that there could be a second dust storm come to Sydney on Saturday… i guess time will tell if this is to be the case.

  • Juilee Pryor replied

hi and yes….it was the bright pink light coming in my window around 6 that woke me…. by the time I piddled about getting some clothes on and such like and got down to the beach it had already changed to orange and then it went beige sort of…. very strange but I enjoyed it for sure…. there could be another storm if these winds don’t die down…. there are little gust here currently that are rattling the roof…... yoiks…....

  • Juilee Pryor replied

hi Tania… and yes indeed…. it was one of those totally random events that just have to make you remember that when it’s all said and done….we’re only here on sufferance….mother nature has the whip hand always….scary really…..

I started the day in Goulburn….it had been raining and windy all night but the car was covered in red dust. We didn’t see any in the sky though

  • Juilee Pryor replied

my goodness you get around…. such a long trip…. and you may have been just on the edge of it….. it was so spooky… just need a soundtrack as I walked down to the beach….. and maybe a few birds falling dead from the sky…..you know the deal…...:)

  • Soxy Fleming

    Soxy Fleming

This reminds me of ominous cyclones in Western Australia but the colour is totally different!!! No wonder these recent photos from so many are being featured on the Home Page. We are all unlikely to see the likes of this again.

  • Juilee Pryor replied

hello Pauline and thanks…. the colours in the sky and the atmosphere where just something else interely…...an amazing natural event for sure…I can’t imagine I’ll see anything quite like this too often…....:)

Great shot! ... but the dust is not so great because that red stuff is every where … in every crack, outside and inside the house.

  • Juilee Pryor replied

lol….yes indeed the damned dust is just every where… the car is just covered in thick red dust that is all streaky …. oh well it was pretty while it lasted….. :)

  • Themis

    Themis

Congratulations on the home page feature, and especially on having the courage to go out of the house in this storm! Very good photo!

  • Juilee Pryor replied

hello Themis and thanks … although it wasn’t really a storm as such it was more like waking up inside a big orange cloud…. the light was incredible and the air was really thick and almost viscous…. but no wind then and it was quite warm too…. the vicious winds came a bit later…. it was the strangest thing….. a dust storm but not stormy…..anyway thanks…...:)

  • Juilee Pryor replied

hi Helen…. yes it’s still a thrill to get a homepage even after all this time…. silly but true…. and the dust storm is a big story here… and all over by the sound of it…. it’s dramatic in a quiet and odd sort of way… mother nature just reminding us of her powers….. we have a big fragile land here andwhen arge amounts of it blow away to sea … well it’s not good…. but the feature is…...:)

I’m just blown away by these shots Juilee. If one didn’t realize what was going on, they would just assume you fiddle with the colour in PS. These are beautiful and truly depict the amazing forces of nature. Frankly I’m amazed even that you took your camera out in it! LOL!

  • Juilee Pryor replied

hi Jan… and thanks… it’s the strangest thing but it wasn’t wild when I went out in it… it was more like being in a warm soft bath of orange talcum powder… warm and dry and just very very odd… and vast too…. so much dust blew over the country….. I was lucky to get these and I’m really glad I got up and went down to the beach…....thanks

    valandsnake

I’m ashamed to admit it, but on seeing the first photos on the morning news of this terrible dust storm, my immediate thought was not of the discomfort, inconvenience, and possible harm being caused, but for the wonderful photo opportunities for those who were there to experience it, and my second was, lucky sods, wont they have some superb captures for red bubble. And you have! LOL Cheers Val

  • Juilee Pryor replied
