This photo is very troubling for me. It is a sad reality that there is such intense forces to discredit God. Thank you for posting this. It reminds me of the kind of prayer that is needed for the world we live in. I pray the author has come to a different conclusion. Nice job with this photo. Thanks again.

I just submitted a picture at Artismurder and it involves writing on the wall. Nasty writing behind a girlfriend I’m photographing with light coming in a window. I bring it up because my present wife said the girl friend must have wrote it! That photo is 30 years old and if it were not for my film scanner I would have never noticed it.

thanks everybody for your wonderful responses to this picture. I hesitated for a while as I’d previously posted a shot of some “graffitihttp://www.”redbubble.com/people/juileep/art/157792-5-god-bless-the-mentally-ill! near where I live and it really upset someone. So I realised that this image also has the capacity to upset someone out there. So its not personal, its just a photograph. But is has its own message.

Nicely taken – I like the faint colours in the shot, giving it more of a ‘documentary’ feel.

  • Juilee Pryor

    Juilee Pryor

Hi Bernt2 I’m glad you like this image. the colour devives from it being a b/w negative that I have scanned with a RGB profile. In order for this to be a true b/w I would need to convert the profile to greyscale which I would normally do but I liked the delicate colours of the image. Seems to give it a bit more depth.

Great shot, love the framing of it, as well as the sentiment – people are entitled to their own beliefs, there are many many different creation myths in the world, of which christianity is just one.

  • Juilee Pryor

    Juilee Pryor

thanks Damien one of my very favorite creation myths was written by JR Tolkien. Its called the simillrion (?) and is not much more that a long essay but its amazing.

  • mrslowney

    mrslowney

i think when it comes to art you don’t need to agree or disagree with the message necessarily and it can be appreciated for its artistic value. I may not agree with the phrase but I still think it is a wonderful photo and very powerful. Art is an outlet and you’ve captured that here. It is a great shot and I’m glad you decided to post it!

  • Juilee Pryor

    Juilee Pryor

thanks for your wonderful comments mrslowney….:)

  • Coralie Casey

    Coralie Casey

This photo does make me sad because the person who wrote the message must have been in an awfully lonely place in life. My heart goes out to that person.

The fact that the message is not true does not take away from the fact that you have framed this beautifully and captured the emotion of the moment.

  • bearhat

    bearhat

what better allegory for a broken faith than a torn umbrella. this is so powerful on so many levels.

  • Juilee Pryor replied

thanks bearhat and yes the symbology is important to me although you are the only person who has actually picked up on it. the battered brolly will still give shelter if needed just like a battered faith.. .... glad you like it…..:)

  • JohnScott

    JohnScott

defiant till the end, all the person has to acknowledge is something greater than oneself.

  • Juilee Pryor replied

thanks John ….yes defiant till the end…. unfortunately this particular graffitist didn’t last much longer in this vale of tears. sad but true. this picture brings them right back to me though. like it was yesterday.

  • Lawford

    Lawford

Classic. Reminds me of a bumper sticker I saw years ago.
‘Jesus Saves. At East West Credit Union.’

  • Juilee Pryor replied

thanks Lawford… do you think they would take this into the living christianity group?

  • Lawford

    Lawford

It’s the only way to be truly saved I think. What is it? 7.5% at the moment.

  • Juilee Pryor replied

huh 7.5% of what…? I probably save about 7.5% of my shower water with a bucket to put down the loo …. do you think that counts?

  • kseriphyn

    kseriphyn

    Cool shot. Very urban.

  • Juilee Pryor replied

thanks KSeriphyn….. I was trying to remember something pithy from the good book about the words of the prophets being written on the subway walls but then I realized they didn’t have subways back then so it must have been an old hippy song…. darn it….

  • liz sterry

    liz sterry

great photo, it was the lighting i think that drew me to it first. the words are from
    Reality Asylum by Crass

  • Juilee Pryor replied

thanks heaps sterry and yes its from a Crass song….Crass were really really big around the time this was taken and the graffitti in this squat was very Crass and punk in its tone and origins….. so glad you like it….its a very old image…...:)

  • animo

    animo

priceless. a great piece. btw the positioning of the umbrella (incidental or deliberate) is brilliant : )

  • Julie Miles

    Julie Miles

As opposed to everyone else, apparently, I was drawn to this piece of art because I think it speaks some truth, in a sense. I don’t believe Jesus died for my sins. I don’t believe he necessarily died for his own, either, but if there is a god of any sort, I doubt an execution that took place 2000 years ago has much bearing on my life today.

That aside, the piece is fascinating. It could say “I own 20 penguins” and still have a wonderful, artistic quality to it.

  • Juilee Pryor replied

hey thanks Julie….. yes there is something timeless about the arrangement of the image. the place it was shot in was a punk squat in the innercity some years ago and the whole place was covered in graffitti like that….... thanks for your comments

  • DrinkMeAlice

    DrinkMeAlice

    Wow, this is fabulous!
It brings back memories of a squat I once knew of… one of the occupants was a formerly homeless but very crazy religious zealot taken in out of sympathy. He covered every bit of every wall with intricately written ramblings taken from the bible. When he wasn’t scrawling all over the walls he was cooking jam in 5 gal kero tins… I recall this because he grabbed a huge bundle of my records and used them as a lid on the boiling mass… you can imagine the shape of the records as a result!

  • Juilee Pryor replied

hey thanks DrinkmeAlice…. squats hey… they just don’t seem to exist anymore…. we might see them come back into vogue though if this economic thingy kicks in….. glad you can relate to this…. it’s a shitty photo really but an effective image…. and it’s part of memory for me…..

Sometimes little bits of wisdom are found in such places. Excellent photograph and the lighting is almost surreal. Well done.

  • Juilee Pryor replied

thanks darlin…. the words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and all that… not really a subway but a grotty squat in this case but you get the general drift for sure…. thanks for looking at this…. AND seeing it….. it’s real not forced and not found in a generic photoshop tutorial book…oh well …. no wonder my work is not exactly …. um….popular…. :)

  • H M Bascom

    H M Bascom

Bah on popularity! Even when it is genuine it is fleeting. Art endures. Garbage rots. I think your work will endure. :-)

  • Juilee Pryor replied

    ars longa, vita brevis

art is long, life is short

I alway have had a very very long term view of what I do… makes it difficult and uncomfortable at times in the short term mind…sigh…oh well…to far down that path to change tack now though….. not to worrry though…I do what I do because I actually believe in the value of what I do..only wish that would pay the rent from time to time… the price of freedom hey

Interesting photo, Juilee. I believe an excellent title for this would be “Lost Hope.” (1 Chronicles 29:15)

  • Juilee Pryor replied

hello leciKiwi…. yes indeed it would be an excellent title…. but it’s had this title for some time now so I’ll probably stick with this one…. it’s not nessecarily what I think… more what I see

There’s a big place in my heart for those who live on the streets. I love that Umbrella and papers in this it really brings alive the message of the writer. It’s likea spritual finger flip. Great documentation Juilee.

  • Juilee Pryor replied

hi KiwiAna and thanks…. yes I love the little people the live all around us in big and small citys…. those that are broken but not beaten ….. this is such an old shot but it just seems to resonate with people…. the broken shelter indicated by that broken old unbrella seems to say a lot to people and gives the graffitti an ambiguous sort of meaning…. I’m really glad you like this…. thanks

you know wat you are just a hatefull person jesus died for all of our sins he never sined!!!!!!!! so if you got something to say e-mail me!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Juilee Pryor replied

goodness me some who can’t tell the difference between a photograph of graffitti and a personal challege to their narrow minded bigotry…... go away and read some books and pehaps eventually you may realize that what we see and record as artists is not always what is in our hearts and minds … and making a record of the reality around us no matter how it effects us personally is our job as artists…....

oh and ‘sined’ is spelt ‘sinned’.
