Vale Ian Rilen

Ian Rilen was a legendary Sydney rock and roller and a member of bands such as Rose Tattoo, X and Sardine V. He died earlier this year and is much missed for his wild and wonderful ways.

I found this candid back stage shot of him and his then wife Stephanie preparing to go onstage at the Trade Union Club in Sydney’s Surry Hills way way back in the early 80’s. They were in Sardine V at that time and when I look at this shot now the eighties rush back. Oh my misspent youth. :)

So Vale Ian Rilen, I so hope things are rocking were ever you are. This shot is for you.

Thanks SNik yes he looks really pensive to me like he’s communicating with his inner self here. 5 minutes to showtime to a crowd already calling for him to come out.

Fantastic – talk about seizing the photographic moment with both hands. This is not just an excellent character portrait (with his pensive self-gaze and the move into his stage persona that you can see in his hand ready to pluck the guitar), but an insightful relationship moment (with his partner seeming to be looking at him looking at himself, moving into her own persona via the cigarette in hand). So many layers to this and the blown-out highlights draw your eyes straight to the guitar and their faces. LOVE IT.

Wow thanks everybody I’m just so amazed to find this on the home page! And thanks for all the complients on it. Its an old picture of someone who died earlier this year after giving his all to rockandroll for most of his life. this is my way of showing some respect to his memory.

Oh and that’s not a veil over Stephanie’s face but rather a wreath of smoke. Remember when you could smoke inside? Seems like a very long time ago.

    Juilee Pryor

Thanks everybody. Nicole you are too kind and I’m really not so sure about ‘perfection’. If I thought I was producing works that good I’d probably have to stop and go and sit on a mountain and meditate for the rest of my life and I’m just not ready for that. Thanks for the thought though. And yes that old rock attitude….. it lives on for sure. Thanks Pat. :)

  • Juilee Pryor

    Juilee Pryor

thanks ollyjones. I’ve played about with the saturation a bit to make the nostalgic atmosphere a bit more obvious. They were originally shot in B/W film so I’ve kept the colour very subtle.
