silo six
It’s been weeks and weeks since I put up any new work… been busy with one thing and another… though that may seem like a poor excuse for not feeding the bubble with new stuff…. anyhow….I thought I’d go back to a medium that I truly love… Infrared film… Kodak of course…. not that they make the damned stuff any more which is heartbreaking to true lover of the medium like myself… I only have three rolls left in the whole world… don’t know what I’m going to do for kicks when I use them…. sigh…. anyway…. a new series of works …. the
Silo’s in Newtown.
This is a very old building and once was a real silo… now it’s been converted to very very expensive chi chi apartments…
.
and I do mean expensive…. but the thing is that the form of the building remains true…. how do you fight such strong lines? They dominate the line of the suburb like nothing else and over the years I’ve wasted my fair share of film on them…. this image and the ones that follow are as small part of that repotire and I do really really hope you enjoy them…. the Silo Series…..

stark, ominous, futuristic . . . brilliant juilee . . . love it
xXx
Juilee Pryor replied
thanks amanda… and yes it is a very stark and dominating structure… I can’t help but be drawn to it
Denis Molodkin
Interesting capture!
Juilee Pryor replied
hi Denis… and it’s an interesting building…. especially in the low rise surrounds of the inner city suburb that it’s in….. cheers
Peter Hill
Juilee this is … is … indescribably … pure. An orgy for the visual sense of texture and tone and scale and body and everything. Yum.
Juilee Pryor replied
thanks Peter… thought the dramatic scale and ….. well just the pure thingyness of the place would appeal to your asethetic sense…. wonderful place to waste a few frames I have to say…. love it…. and stoked you like this… I’ll be putting up a few from this particular spot in the next couple of days….. :)
alistair mcbride
Very dramatic image Juilee and the grain is beautiful.
Juilee Pryor replied
lol…the only grain you can get out of this place thesedays is down to the film you use….. love that comment…. and IR…film not digital is typified by the grain structure….. its at once compelling and irritating as it’s relatively uncontrollable…quite difficult to use IR film… which is of course one of the reasons I love it so….. glad you like it alistair…..:)

Juilee wow..first thing that come to mind is that would be a lot of stairs to the roof…awesome medium ,, like the photo..I’m in AWE
Juilee Pryor replied
hi there and yes the stairs to the top are totally to be taken in to consideration….. mind you the view is pretty good…..:)
here’s what it looks like as a shwish apartment complex… although to be honest I prefer it all dark and gothic… more in keeping with the area…...
Juilee Pryor
damn that didn’t work… oh well I’ll try again later… meanwhile suffice it to say the advertising shots of the refurb bear very little relation to the way I’ve shot the building…. I must have dark eyes or something…...:)
peaceofthenorth
yeah if you have enough money to buy one of these condos your life is probably dark and gloomy
Juilee Pryor replied
no joke Steve… half a mill for a tiny circular box up countless stairs and right on the freight line…. no thanks….. I mean if you can find a sofa small enough to get up the stairs and into the apartment… you don’t have a straight wall to put it up against…. nah…. I like sunshine and birds and stuff and walls straight enought to hang art work on….. I’m happy out of town for now… but…. but I’m happy to waste a few frames on the place everytime I go past it… it’s a great place so photo….. and that costs bugger all…. so I figure I’m in front…..:)
LeighN
Great image, love the grain and tones! Would love to have it in the group Sydney’s Inner West
Juilee Pryor replied

Scott d'Almeida

Juilee Pryor replied
thanks Scott….:)
Mel Brackstone
People live in there???? What a gorgeous image though, love the grain and light.
Juilee Pryor replied
these old silo’s right on the frieght line had the most amazing transformation into highend supersmart and incrediably expensive apartments…. circular apartments… no joke… they are really something to look at mind but I liked them when they looked like this….. :)
Ria White
excellent work
Juilee Pryor replied
hi Ria and thanks heaps… can’t resist a fabulously odd building… and this one is right in the inner city as well…... amazing
LeighN
Featured in the Sydney’s Inner West groupJuilee Pryor replied
hi LeighN and thanks…. I’ve still got a few more of these silo shots but hesitated to post more incase people were bored of them already….. your featured just made my moment…. thanks heaps
Alex Howen
I have to admit to only discovering this image after it was featured. The inner west has a number of buildings around which the surrounding suburb seems to be anchored. I love this shot Juilee. I have often wondered what it would be like to live there.
Juilee Pryor replied
hi Alex…. the building is in a great location right on the Newtown hub and near transport and close to the centre of Sydney itself …. and I’m pretty sure the views from the roof would be pretty special …. don’t know about living with circular walls though….. hmm…. mind you there are still some beautiful and amazing old buildings in this area…. you just have to find them before they get redeveloped …...:)
