Urban Landscape #27 St Peters Street
This collection of Urban Landscapes is drawn from a larger body of work called Darkscapes. They are moody evocative invitations into mystery and imagination taken from the ordinary things that make up the fabric of city life. Beauty is all around us if only we take the time to notice it. We all look but maybe we don’t all see. This collection of images is a way for me to share what I see with others.
I was leaving my studio in St Peters late one night and as exited the car park I took a quick snap from the car window. The somewhat eerie feel to this photograph is just how it feels to be in in that area late at night. Spooky!

Reminds me of a car chase – and frenetic speed!

Actually I was working late in the studio one night and the cops pulled up some Redfern locals in this apprently deserted backsteet and two car loads of cops started to wade into these two Koorie kids like you wouldn’t believe. I was printing in my makeshift darkroom up above them so they couldn’t see me but I sure could see them so I grabbed the camera and took a bunch of shots (not with a flash though). The images are not the best but the experience of watching this drama play out before me was really freaky. No one else knew I was there so the boys in blue thought they could do what ever and get away with it. Mayby its the area but this particular shot really sums up that time and place for me big time.
cheers JP

Captures that feeling of dark soul of a city well. Not a welcoming place to wander.

Reminds me of the images I would come home w/ after a hard night out on the town.
Kind of a risky way to work on a series.
I like this!

yes I don’t mind a bit of dark and dirty to an image. Gives it a bit of grunt. And this is just what I would see after a big session of painting or whatever at my studio in the grimy innercity post industial estate were my studio was at the time.

i don’t feel spooked at all. this reminds me of night journeys when you are so fatigued and thirsty that the world begins to swim in a embrionic like haze. for some reason i really like the blurry images. this one too. ofcourse.

Must have been an awful experience for you watching that stuff…having been on the receiving end of an assault late at night, this image conjures up the sheer terror and isolation one feels in this situation, I can feel my heart pounding right now. Fantastic image Juilee.
