To Death Us Do Drug

To Death Us Do Drug

A very old analouge negative taken on Boxing Day some twenty odd years ago. This girl was living with my younger sister in Darlinghurst in Sydney at the time and yes there were drugs involved. Neither of them survived the experience. All I have left is some very old photo’s and my memories. To death us do drug. Was that a challenge, a motto or a promise. I could never work it out.

Powerful. The black and white actually adds a lot to it, which seems to me atypical for an “urban” shot. Very good job.

  • Juilee Pryor

    Juilee Pryor

thanks lynauklet. actually I think b/w works best in urban situations. we see in colour so its not as authouritive when making statement works. like this one. would have been crap in colour.

the photo is one that could find itself in any book on photo-journalism, the story is far too close to home to make this anything other than truly and gut wrenchingly sad. What a great waste. Once drugs grab a hold, they become your family and your friends.. it’ s so difficult to break back into a life so taken. Thank you for posting this, i hope it helps you to somehow come to terms and move on.

  • Cindy RN

    Cindy RN

Juilee so brave of you to share such a personal tragedy. This sort of thing is very hard to wrap your brain around, even as a nurse, I know the dynamics, but to totally understand how so many take this route in their lives, it is hard to comprehend. Each day is a mere existence for them, and how they can get their next score, very, very sad. And so often the end results is death.

Many hugs for you, and perhaps at least one person will look at this and decide that they want help, or see what happens to those who do drugs and will chose not to take that route in their life.

  • Juilee Pryor replied

thanks heaps HarrietRN…... every situation like this is a personal one and every generation learns the hard way time after time…. I can hope that posting something personal like this will help even one person but who can know…..... its like these girls were just in so much pain from being alive…... and they were so young and so full of talent and life…... it becomes evern more inexplicable as you get older to be honest…. thanks for looking and commenting…....

Sending you my heartfelt condolences for your huge loss and sending a huge HUG for comfort.
    ~Sassi

  • Juilee Pryor replied

thanks for your words Sassi…. and they are very apt…. the Rise image is exactly about that and maybe more but yes basically that’s it you have got it… it’s like the ancient chinese proverb that goes something like

if life knocks you down seven times then get back up eight times

Strong picture and sad story. This is the opposite of the ‘ideal’ punk youth.
The writing reminds me of that other great picture of the American soldier with the writing on his helmet. Ironicly often used in the punkaera.

  • Juilee Pryor replied

hello majo and thanks for getting that… yes this was the side of punk that wasn’t talked about … the death and despair… the waste ….

sadly I don’t know the picture you are referring to but I would love to see it… don’t suppose you could find it and post it here? I would love to see it… something about the way some images cut right to the core of our being I guess…. and thanks again for looking

  • DragonFlyer

    DragonFlyer

Hi Juilee – I saw your post in Martin’s thread. It motivated me to have another look all the way through your whole portfolio… We put so much of ourselves, and what has been to make us who we are into our art…. some of it most usually is – like this – so deep that it becomes a fundamental part of who we become as a person all the rest of our lives…
I am truly sorry you have had to be so so close to such pain. There can be so much of it in life…
    Kallena xx

  • Juilee Pryor replied

thanks Kallena… it’s funny how we sometimes hide our deeper selves… what really inspires us and what really motivates us… and the pains that stay with us… sometimes I post things that mean a lot to me but hide those images with pretty pictures that don’t mean so much… but it’s all there… thanks for looking hon….. :)

  • ForestGirl

    ForestGirl

I just picked this up in the thread as well and was lead to come and have a closer look … a very poignant photo and the history behind it says so very very much … the pains we carry through our lives can often not be seen by others .. those little things that trigger a memory, mean something to us but nothing to the person standing beside us … the scars that we carry whether internal or external … it’s all there and at the end of the day it is what makes us us … it is just sad what we lose on the way ..

  • Juilee Pryor replied

hi there ForestGirl and thanks heaps for your considered reply… it’s a real slice of my life and even all this time later I am still affected by the loss of my sister…. and that is like a scar on my soul somehow…. you never forget these things…. cheers…..

my bro died last year fro window cleaner in his heroin and nobody cares about who poisoned him cause he was homeless so i know atlest abit of how it feel im sorry kiddo

  • Juilee Pryor replied

hey there joshua… reading that made me want to cry… a couple of months before mandy died she had been raped and beaten by two skinheads who thought it funny to take out their mindless rage on a punk rocker… when she went into the police station to report it the cops took one look at her with her mohawk and tatts and laughed at her and threw her out of the station… I can’t forget that and writing this now all that awfullness and confusion comes back … how can they have so misjudged her pain… how much did that contribute to her overdose…. who are we to judge others based on what they damned well look like…. we all need solace … my sister your brother they have as much value as mother teresa or bill gates…. thanks for dropping by… our siblings remain alive while we remember them… and honour their memorys with our love
