Real Fucking Idiots
this ancient analouge image is the Sydney skyline in 1982 from the WatchTower building that overlooks Redfern station. Now days it’s all multi million dollar apartments but it was a very different city back then. The graffitti is actually the name of a punk band that was squatting in the building at the time. But the image could also be read as a comment and observation on some of the goings on around here in bubbleland. Or maybe I just posted it because Muscular Teeth tells me he likes my apocalyptic images….... the interpretation is open….....

MuscularTeeth
well yes i like it… looks like a ruined city…roaming packs of wild dogs… occasionaly Loner phsycho…
Juilee Pryor replied
geez louise that was quick and yes the packs of roaming wild dogs is a nice touch but that was certainly Sydney in the early eighties…much less glitzy and swish than it is now that’s for sure….....glad you like it though…....:)
MuscularTeeth
yeah coincidence i was walktzing past.. aah the early eighties- great movies made then…
ltruskett
One of your best…...love the misspelling…...!!! Fabulous Sydney.
Juilee Pryor replied
hey thanks you…. yes the spelling mistake is actually the anarchy sign crossed out…. I’ve got another version where the graffitti is clearer but the image is less dynamic…... anyway yes Sydney ….. fabulous even when she’s grotty and run down…... I love this city…....:)
Christine Wilson
Love this Julie, I’ve just finished watching life after people – takes you through a few thousand years or so and what becomes of the buildings we have left behind excellent doco this shot of yours depicts that feeling so well _ mans last message !!
Juilee Pryor replied
thanks heaps Christine…... yes it’s like an abandoned movie set or something….. but it was very gritty city back in the early eighties….. glad you like it…...:)
H M Bascom
Totally fucking awesome.
Juilee Pryor replied
that’s my pleasure my dear…..I don’t nessesarily subscribe to the ‘if you can’t beat them join them’ set….... I’ll just have to post stronger work to conterbalance the other energies and tendencies that also exist here in bubbleland…..
Christine Wilson
Funny I have a shot of Melb with that title ! a film shot late around 1990 or so
roybarry
Cool shot, definitely has the look of “record cover” about it.
Juilee Pryor replied
thanks heaps Royboy…. yes very punk and post punk times then…. and the city was much grittyer place then…. not so much money around as now days…... I’m so glad I use film though…. if this had been shot on digital it would have most likey been deleted straight away but now twenty five years later….. it its relevant in a totally unexpected way….... amazing
TheDeadDadaists
The buildings look like cardboard models ;-)
And for some reason, no soundtrack = silent movie . . . we love it >XO!OX<
Juilee Pryor replied
thanks you deaddadaist…. I love dada….. and it was a really punk era which looking back now at images like this…. its does seem like a movie set…. and it was such a surreal time back then that it suits it perfectly
transmute
That’s totally plunk
Juilee Pryor replied
it was a punk plunk though….
roybarry
Juilee, I agree with your sentiments about film and about the money that is sloshing around. These days, the old world is disappearing-everything needs to be plate glass, chrome and bloody designer this, that and the other. Whether it’s because I’m getting older or just looking at the world through rose tinted specs, I don’t know-all I do know is that I miss grime and grit. Things are far too clinical these days.
Juilee Pryor replied
the whole urban landscape changes slowly enough that we really don’t notice it happening around us till we see stuff like this to be honest and it reminds us of what we have lost….. and I agree with the deaddadaist comment below…. deriliction has its own beauty and inevitablity….. it works for me…..
TheDeadDadaists
Worry not, Roy, deriliction always wins, in the end . . . ;-)
Juilee Pryor replied
I think you may well be completely correct young sir!
butchart
i’m beginning to see the bigger picture…..........
Juilee Pryor replied
hey you….. yes its all about something else …. also I”ve been scanning some stuff from then and this came up and the sentiment was timely…...... :)
marniesmith
LOL, Australians do have a penchant for not mincing their words. :)
Juilee Pryor replied
hi marniesmith…. it’s all in the way we say the things we say…... inflection is everything…. which doesn’t really come across in the 2D world but basically yes your right….. :)
marniesmith
Don’t get me wrong, I love the way Ozzies say what they really think. :>P)
butchart
if u want to vent… holler at me… i’ve become oblivious to most of the drama….. would be good to get an update i suppose…...... i’ve missed you…...............b
Juilee Pryor replied
hi there you….. I just need to step back abit and take a reality check…... but in the end I really like posting images and chatting so I’m still here…....:)
Zolton
That is a fucking fabulous image.
Juilee Pryor replied
hey thanks Zolton….. I have more….....:)
ShepS
Not sure what is going down uin bubbleland – but for sure this is not the sydney I remember and loved!! Great message
Juilee Pryor replied
thanks ShepS…..this was taken a long time ago and it’s got that old sort of look…. Sydney is really glitzy and swish these days…. you would never find a building in the inner city that looks like this one now…....... glad you like it though…...:)
Col Finnie
Glad this one didn’t end up in the bin. I see the silliness of making a city looking bland. I say “hear hear” to the comment on the roof.
Juilee Pryor replied
thanks Col….. yes I was suprised by this image too when it turned up ….. there were just these two images on the end of a roll of film from another photo shot….. so a nice suprise anyway…...:glad you like this sort of gritty shot…...
Paul Vanzella
strong image – adore the grain!
Juilee Pryor replied
hey thanks Paul…..and yes the grainy look of film that’s been ‘maturing’ for 25 years…... gives the image some other sort of reality…..
AndyGii
Strong image and that grainy finish again. No wonder your my favourite un-photographer
Juilee Pryor replied
ha ha thanks Andy….. yes only a un-photograher would find this an interesting vista I think….. not your average tourist shot and all that…... really glad you like it….:)
AndyGii
Definately alternative. Thankyou for being so inspiring
Julie Langford
Love this Juilee – so much impact and message to it. I love how it states boldly – Hey, this is me, and this is what I think. the rugged texture and the smoke plume in the distance really give impact.
pingpong
I wonder if i knew you , i lived in darlinghurst back then and lived in a house full of punks and heroin addicts. Did you ever see kill the king?
I probably saw this one time at a roof top party but can’t remember, it makes me feel old this photo of yours, but i like it
Juilee Pryor replied
hi pingpong….. I wouldn’t be suprised to find our paths had crossed… and yes I remember Kill the King…. those wild days back then….can’t believe it now but oh well…....
pingpong
well now there’s another thing going on not so removed from then so believe it! :P
mausue
Great image. Love the perspective and processing which gives it a real gritty, urban, anarchic feel!!
Juilee Pryor replied
hey thanks mausue….. glad you like it
Sam Fonte
hey Juliee, great shot of the public housing guetto in waterloo… i live in one of those buildings, they’re still standing!! ....i can report that it’s still a grimey, grotty, intense place to be, not at all glitzy or swish!!.... there’s still plenty of weird shit to fotograph around here.
cheers
Sammi
KreddibleTrout
i gotta spend more time looking through your stuff. somehow I missed a lot of these great photos.
Juilee Pryor replied
hey there Kreddible … and hey thanks and help your self… pull up an easy chair and go for it…. :)
Thomas Simunsen
Sadly still a very real indictment on many places today….in Melbourne it appears the lunatics are running the asylum.
Juilee Pryor replied
hi ya Thomas and thanks…. and it’s not just happening in Melbourne…... :)
