There are a couple different methods to the summit of Whiteface Mountain near Lake Placid, NY. By foot is one way. A much faster and easier method, weather conditions allowing, is driving to a developed pre-summit area. Whiteface Memorial Highway (a windy 2 lane toll road) reaches a parking area at an elevation of 4,600ft (1,402m), with the remaining 267ft (81m) to the summit being obtained by tunnel and elevator.
This 424-foot (129m) long tunnel runs towards the core of the mountain, which then has an elevator at the end, that rises another 276 feet (84m or approximately 27 stories) to the summit.
I have a few friends who consider this method of getting to the rather petite summit of 4,865 feet (1,483 m) as cheating, but it was the only option w/ our 4 and 7 yr olds. ;)
While there, we saw zero other visitors because there was zero visibility from the 360º view at the top. At least I could make this multiple exposed image w/ the tunnel clear of people, and course I didn’t have a tripod w/ me.
