Coluber constrictor priapus

Souther black racer.
Coluber constrictor priapus.
Mt. Dora, Florida.
18 August 2006.
Nikon D70s.

Of all the Floridian snakes, I believe the Southern black racer has adapted best to human development. They actually do quite well in neighborhoods and small downtowns. Perhaps it is a combination of their fast speeds and sharp visual acuity? Regardless of the reason, they are there in force (to the dismay of a few snowbirds who are shocked that there are reptiles in Florida).

This racer was in family’s backyard in Mt. Dora, Florida. So much cuteness, so little time!

Very kind words, J.K. I appreciate them greatly! Interestingly, I didn’t think this one worked out well at the time. Sort of missed it and rediscovered it when I was going through my archives. Pleasant surprises sometimes, eh?

    Thanks again – -

He’s awesome… Love the alertness in his eyes and that racer intensity. I also like the little bicycle-tire loop of his body that is fading off into the background. A fantastic capture of a fantastic snake species!

The racer embraces your love! ...And so do I.

I owe everything to the racer on this one. The pose was his idea. As it usually is with racers… Heh heh.

    Many thanks ~~

These are one of my favorite snakes ; I also love the Eastern Yellow belly(Blue) Racer, it’s northern cousin.
