Pastel Anger Management

I am an artist, but let me begin by telling you that pastels anger me.

Why are these colours allowed on the planet? They are insipid, nausea-inducing, sickly-sweet, sacchariney (is that a word?) and I can’t stand them. Aren’t artists by their very nature, lovers of all colour? Not me.

Recently, our local library held an exhibition of paintings, all displaying thick globs of pale pinks, lilacs, barely greens. I literally could not walk through the hallway without feeling angry and physically sick. I had to close my eyes against the assault on my senses.

Many aeons ago, I once had my “colours done” – meaning a woman scraped my hair back and then put a white bib on me, holding up colours one by one against my skin. She eventually determined that white and black drained me and that I was a “Rich Earthy Autumn Leaf.” I love autumn colours, so I was happy with her decision – creams, warm browns, olives, teals, peacock blues, rusts, mustards, reds, vibrant greens – lovely. And beige. Yes, it may be a light colour, but it’s not a pastel…honest – it’s neutral.

If I get to heaven, I’ll ask God if I can have a robe in off-white or cream instead of blinding white, or I’ll just look ill and devoid of colour which may distract from me worshipping with my whole heart….or is that a little too self-absorbed?

Anyway, back to beige.

Beige calms me. It’s neutrality and lack of jarring personality in the colour (can one call it a colour if it’s so neutral?), soothes and brings a tranquil, almost yogic-like peace into my soul. It’s a good thing in fact, that at this very moment, I am wearing beige overalls.

Here I go.

Deep breath.

I’m putting the finishing touches of (I can barely say it!) Pretty Polly Pink on my latest “canvas” – a true labour of love….and my six year old daughter had better love her new bedroom!
