Made for TV

“Where are we?” Angel stood in the middle of the steaming jungle, weighed down with her backpack.

“I have no idea honey.” Tom dropped his backpack and wiped his sweating face with his bandana.

Bob, the cameraman kept rolling. He knew that the producers of The Amazing Race wanted a great series this year. They were hoping for another Emmy.

They knew they were lost, but they had to keep going before nightfall. Angel looked around her and smiling, pointed to a clearing through the trees. In the middle of the clearing stood an old hut with a roof made of banana leaves.

Walking towards the hut, Angel called out “Hello! Is anyone there?”

“Who’s that? Who are you? What do you want?” A hoarse, reedy voice came from inside.

“We’re Americans, we’re doing the Amazing Race for TV but we’re lost!” Tom started toward the hut.

Slowly, from the doorway a man appeared, hands bound and eyes blindfolded. “ Please help! My name is John Gibson. I have no idea where I am, I cannot see…I was kidnapped a few days ago, but haven’t seen sight nor sound of my captors since. Help me…”

Three hours later, just before nightfall Angel, Tom and Bob finally made it to the finishing mat, causing a stir when John fell to his knees in front of Phil Keoghan, the heartthrob host.

Phil looked at them all, paused, then raising his famous eyebrow uttered the words they knew were coming.

“Tom, Angel, you are last to arrive. I’m sorry to tell you, you have been eliminated.”

Tom and Angel bowed their heads, too exhausted and numb to speak.

“Is there anything you want to say?” Phil asked gently?

“There is something I want to say,” said John firmly stepping in front of the camera.

Bob the cameraman smiled. The Emmy was his.

Looking directly into the camera, John started to sing;

“Amazing Race! How sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me…I once was lost, but now am found..was blind but now I see…”
