This is Mr.T one of the most notorious lions(Panthera leo) of the Sabi Sands game reserve. This was taken 3 and a half years ago ,found it in my archives. The mapogos were a coalition of male lions that controlled the Sabi Sands for 6 years until they lost the battle of survrvial of the fittest. There are now only 2 survivors(Makulu and Pretty Boy) and are intermittently seen but still around but don`t have a territory.Mr.T was also known as Mohawk to some and has this distinctive mohawk hair style and nose abnormality probably as a consequence of a fight. He was killed by the Selati coalition of now 4 lions near Ulusaba around 6 months ago.The Selati`s are also known as the southern males . We were fortunate to see Mr.T many times during visits to the Sabi Sands over the years, sleeping, fighting with siblings for mating rights, mating, and making a live buffalo kill. The Mapogo coalition also killed many lions in the area in their quest for dominance hence their notoriety!!

Wow he is just beautiful!! So sorry he was killed, but I know that it is the fittest that lives. Those are quite large teeth there!!

  • We were all sorry to hear on the wildlife blogs when he died ,he was what all the legends about king of the beasts are all about and the mapgos ruled for a good 6 years in the prime of their lives :)

  • Thanks,Laura,he was behaving like a typical jealous male as his brother was getting too close to his mating partner, the anger was not directed to us but it was loud and we were pretty close but not threatened :)
