Joy Skinner is a self taught artist whose work with the medium of watercolor, along with her vivid style, evokes a quality of strength and purity. One’s perception is transformed and the subject matter becomes something far richer in the experience of the viewer.
Joy’s talent emerged at a time when her children were grown and moving on with their own lives. She began seeking something new and meaningful in her life and painting seemed like a good choice. Her journey into the art world started with studying anything she could get her hands on about art, artists, and their chosen style and medium. She loved the “Luminosity” and “Transparency” of watercolor – enjoyed the challenge of having to “Get it right the first time,” and decided her biggest challenge of all was going to be adding vibrancy to this mix.
Born and raised in Brandon Manitoba, Canada, to an extreme climate, Joy found that her mood was often dictated by the weather. As a result, her paintings are inspired by thoughts of warm summer days with visions of light dancing on otherwise inanimate objects, seemingly bringing them to life. I try to convey this excitement through my work.
Today, Joy resides in Sedona, AZ, where she is inspired by the unique beauty that surrounds her. “Sedona affords me endless opportunity for creativity and inner satisfaction, so I try to use form, line, color, and design to evoke emotions that my viewers can share.” Most days finds Joy in her studio with a paintbrush, or touring around with her camera. She has a master’s degree in business, a degree in adult education and conducts art workshops all over North America teaching the techniques that she uses, as well as providing business consultations to artists.
Joy’s work is found in numerous public and private collections and she has successfully participated in many juried art exhibitions.
