Thank you! I scanned in real watercolour paper to get the texture right. I simplified the details of my photo, accentuating the edges to imitate the darker line you get when the watercolours bleed together when overlapping. I filled a new layer with the paper texture and experimented with layer blending modes like colour burn until I got the result I was looking for. It takes a lot longer than using effects filters, but I think the results are more realistic.

Thanks for the comments everyone! I haven’t been active on Red Bubble (or any art site) for ages due to work and having two young girls under two, so I was surprised to see an old image on the home page! I’m planning on getting more involved once I leave teaching at the end of this year – and have more time to take photos and create art.
