Plankton makes it’s mark at the bottom of the marine foodweb as the primary producer of oceanic biomass. All larger marine species depend on plankton as their food source for growth and development. The composition of plankton is set to change radically as a result of climate change and this will affect what species inhabit marine ecosystems of the future. Some planktonic species, especially those with calcarious shells, (eg the pteropods Limacina bulimoides, Cavolinia uncinate, and the heliozoan Acanthocystis perpusilla) are likely to go extinct as the amount of dissolved carbon in the oceans increases due to a build up of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
