Forte da Ínsua

João Figueiredo

Forsheda, Sweden

Artist's Description

This fort at the Ínsua island stands just some meters before the border between Portugal and Spain at the river Minho’s base level.
The first setlements of that island were due to the catholic Cenobitic monks in 1392, but in was only in 1502 that the king D.Manuel I ordered that the convent would be transformed into a fortress. Today the fort is a national monument and can be visited by boat from Caminha.
Photo taken from the beach at the Caminha’s bay inside of the river Minho.
