Inside of the city walls, in the old town, this is how the streets look like. Many hundreds (if not thousands) of small shops filled with handcraft and traditional textiles with embroidery and needlework. Restaurants with typical food, snacks and expresso (aka “café” in portuguese) are also as many and as good.
The difference in the price and quality between these and the ones you can find across the river Minho (In Spanish territory) less then a mile away is so big that the streets of Valença have more Spanish than Portuguese people. In fact, the difference is so big that on the other side of the river they don’t even have half of the restaurants and traditional shops as here, and according to the historical records, this is a difference that exists for centuries…
