In passed times Valença was an extremely important city both financially and militarily. The incredible fortress that surrounds it is the proof of that.
This fortress was built between the XII and the XIII century and had as main purpose to protect the river boat sailing (on the portuguese side) and the border itself. Among many other interesting facts, this fortress was one of the very few places that Napoleon managed to conquer in his 3 attempts to conquer Portugal (which he allways failed…).
