Artist's Description

This Chapel stands right behind the chapel on the top of this stairway and it is dedicated to the moments of pain and suffering that Virgin Mary (the mother of Jesus for those who don’t know) lived during the time that Jesus was arrested, judged and killed. Therefore, the name of the Chapel is “Our Lady of the Calvary Chapel” (Capela da Nossa Senhora do Calvário in portuguese).

This Chapel was built with the money and the will of a local man that migrated to Lisbon and became wealthy in the construction branch during the beggining of the XX century. To show his appreciation torwards his faith and his hometown, he decided to transform a small cave into a Chapel. Furthermore, inside of that cave (which can still be seen inside of the Chapel) there is a small water spring which was blessed by the local Bishop at that time.
