Ladies and Gentleman, let me present you the D.Luis bridge. It connects the two sides of the river Douro as well the two cities of Gaia (from this side) and Porto (from the other one).
This bridge was built between 1881 and 1888 according to the project made by the civil engeneer Théophile Seyrig which once had a bridge building company with Gustave Eiffel (you know, the same dude that projected the Eifel Tower!). Curiously, some when in his life, Théophile Seyrig goes to work to another company (Société Willebroeck) and runs against his old business partner Gustave Eiffel for the construction of the bridge, and won!
Initially the bridge had two spans for car and people circulation, but in 2003 the superior span was closed down in order to open a subway line connecting both sides of the river. People still can go on the top span. This bridge is also a national monument.
