Riksväg 1 - Bridge over Lagan - Värnamo (panorama) by

Riksväg 1 (R1), which is Swedish for Kingdom’s road 1 used to be the main road from Stockholm to Helsingborg which used to be the main city in southern Sweden due to it’s history and geographical proximity to Denmark. This road had a lifetime from 1945 to 1962 the time when the European road system started to gain strenght in Sweden and the road was replaced by the E4. The E4 didn’t took over the whole R1 though, some pieces of them remain as it is the case of the place shown in this photo. In the city of Värnamo the road crosses the river Lagan in this beautiful bridge.

Wonderful image Joao and most interesting because the River Lagan also flows through Belfast, our capitol city here in N Ireland…………………………..now we have one each…………………….haha…………………………..Joyce

  • Well, I am really not surprised! The celts are one of the viking people. Vikings were not a people as we usually learn in history, they were a cultural movemvent (like the cruzaders or the discoveries in the 15, 16 and 17 centuries) of several Germanic people. And they all spoke Old Germanic (aka Runic) where many languages descend from (German, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, English, Celtic languages like Gaelic f.i., Icelandic and English). So, I wouldn’t be surprised if both names could have the same origin… Very interesting and funny! As you said, now we both have one Lagan for ourselves! Ahahah :) much appreciated for the coment and fave Joyce!! :)
