Scarborough Lighthouse

Scarborough Lighthouse

A lucky photo of the lighthouse at Scarborough.

I’d had my back to the lighthouse for some time watching the light falling over the south beach when I turned round to see a huge black cloud behind the lighthouse and this beautiful rainbow. I only had about a minute to get the photo I wanted before the rainbow faded and the heavens opened soaking me to the skin!

I live in that town and to get that shot, so many things have to be in the right place.
Absolutely brilliantly seen and shot. exeptionally well done. Just one question tho’, was it was it pure luck, and you just happened to be there or was it judgement and you planned it?

  • Jon Tait replied

Hi Trevor, thanks for your comment. I’d been stood by the railings watching the harbour and the beach with my back to the lighthouse for ages when the light started to fade, so I turned round and saw that scene. I managed to get about 10 shots off before the heavens opened and I got drenched!!

Great shot… I’m presumig the figure & shadow is post-processed? (If so, perhaps the shadow needs to be more off-centre, pov angled as is the figure. If not forget I wrote this and delete.)

  • Jon Tait replied

No post processing, I was in the right place at the right time! I appreciate your thoughts and can see what changes your thoughts would make to the image, thanks for taking the time to comment :)

I’m also looking for a replacement camera.looked at your profile. Yours seems to do a good job. My FUJI 602 Z makes images either too small 2Megs jpg or too big 17 Megs tiff.
Would like something in between, say 10 or12 megs. I have asked in a local ‘SPECIALIST’ chain store and they couldn’t help. So what does yours do please.

  • Jon Tait replied

Hi Trevor, the 400D (Canon) I use is great and I’ve been chuffed to death with it. It’s a 10MP sensor and file sizes range between 3.5MB for JPEGs to around 9MB for the RAW images. I tend to shoot RAW all the time as I prefer the flexibility you get with them, of course you need large capacity cards (it takes Comapct Flash) but as these are getting cheaper and cheaper that’s not really problem anymore.

Thanks for that one, I’m also having trouble adding any more images to the site. I’ve put on ever so many and now transfer software seems to have ceased working any ideas or reasons why, have I missed something or not?

Wow, This is superb! I live in Scarborough and have taken many shots from this angle. To get all the conditions right was very lucky and must be rewarding! The Shadow of the diving Belle is great! Iv’e never noticed a shadow on the lighthouse, The sun must have been just right – well done!

  • Jon Tait replied 26 days ago

Thanks Paul, I was very lucky. I’d been looking out over the bay waiting for the light to fall behind the spa then I decided to run round and saw the lighthouse, the shadow and the rainbow all in the right place. I got off about 6 photos before the rain came and I got soaked on the walk back to the car!
