Apart from the occasional hint of possible violence, or the intuitive feeling sometimes about being in the wrong place, wrong seat, wrong part of town, every now and then, my last 6 years in New York have not been disturbing or threatening- until this last few days.
My wife and I own two ‘bohemian’ cafes in the East Village of Manhattan and another in Bushwick, an area of Brooklyn now famous for its’ art colony.
It’s not pretty there, far from it, and at night on the street though nothing has ever happened to me personally,, but as I say, all quiet until a couple of weeks ago.
Then one day we noticed that one of the café windows was cracked, right across it. When we investigated, the cause of the crack was a small impact- made, so we were told by the guys who replace the glass, by a small caliber bullet which had hit with enough force to break the thick glass but not to break through, just as well there were customers in there!
So last night, I’m at the bar as usual chatting to patrons when I get approached by this young English guy; turns out he’s on the first leg of a round-the-world tour and staying with a friend not far from our bar. After a few beers he asks me just how safe is it in the area- I explained that it’s safe and not to worry, just no be stupid, be street savvy.
Ironic then that later my wife and I leave for the evening, (it was about 10pm) and go out from the café to our car parked on the dark street outside. Where we discover that the rear left-hand-side window of our 1993 Volvo Estate is shattered, not broken but crackled right across, the way auto safety glass breaks.
On closer inspection, the window has the same small caliber impact hole. It had been shot at, outside our cafe!
Are these two incidents connected, are we being targeted, or am I just being paranoid?
