wow – These guys seem to be everywhere. Never saw one until around 3 years ago here in Peru atTambopata Reserve. Then I see photos opf same from the USA and now OZ…
Here it is called the Snake Bird. Shag has a whole other meaning! =) Alas I lost the bulk of my images from that trip due to a failed HD but I do have one of the snakebird at low res which I salvaged from a web image I uploaded.

You are right! This is in fact a Darter, or snake bird, I got them mixed up, a shag or cormorants has a shorter neck and is a smaller bird! Took pictures of both today. ;

... Lol… The cormorants up in the West of Ireland where I fly fish when home are bigger than the snake bird I saw. They are grey cormorants which are quite common in reland. But I believe that generally they are quite small birds…

I think there are a few different breeds of cormorants, the ones I see the most are black and white ;-)
