Publicity card #1

Just an idea I had of creating some marketing material- I thought instead of sending out business cards I could create a ‘business greeting card’. Just playing around with ideas but I thought this image was good starting block…

Thanks Paul- let’s just see how well they print out- an expensive substitute for business cards- but hay, gotta get an edge somehow eh?

I’ve done the ‘business greeting card” thing and it works an absolute treat. Everyone loves the cards. And this just looks awesome.

    Hi Jonny, how you going?

I have a q. How do you get your images to look so rich? Is it the medium format you’re using? eg the photo of esz is so rich in colour, as is the shot of the derelict building. Fill me in!!

And your business cards look wonderful. Did you take the shot in a studio? Would love to know how you did it!

Thanks Jasmine. Firstly, I use Provia 100F transparency film. While this film does not provide as much colour saturation as Velvia it is a very good film for scanning once processed. Once scanned I use Photoshop. To get an image such as this one I basically separate the image into it’s core components- in this image the breakdown was, in order of priority; Upper body and legs, dress, red material, wall, ground. Once I separate them into different layers I apply colour, contrast and level adjustments and various other adjustments to each layer. By using this approach I can subtly draw the eye to the key feature, being the dress and the red tie, by darkening the background and desaturating the colour in non-essential areas as well as adjusting DOF and general sharpness.
I shot this at the Creative arts college in Southbank-it was around 1620hrs in the afternoon and I got a nice soft, very directional, sunlight just as the sun was disappearing behind some buildings. (I should have used a reflector to balance the light on the furtherest side of the body, but I didn’t have one and had to do it in PS). I used the Mamiya 645 with a 55mm lens set at f2.8 and 1/1000th shutter speed.
