Believe me, nobody can tell you this is not perfect. You’ll always get some pompous fool who will tell you your cropping is all wrong and that they don’t like the way her hands frame the face… or that the eyes don’t look natural… what strikes me about this is that you’ve not followed any particular rules as to composition, but your slightly off-center crop and placement of the hands along with your amazing lighting make this one of the most compelling portraits I have ever seen. The eyes ARE overdone, and it is just that which brings this to a higher level… they are embedded jewels that suck you right into their depth and don’t even let you go.

I like the detail you’ve retained through your beautifully done soft focus processing… the eyebrows are gorgeous, the delicate strands of hair around the fingers are subtle, but like the perfectly place beauty mark keep me circulating around the image, just so enjoying the ride. I really think this is a massive portrait, and an original take in an area where we thought we’ve seen it all before. If you’re still learning, you’ve got a great future ahead of you!

By the way, your youngest is a gorgeous lady, and she should be way happy how you’ve immortalized her karma.

I’m no expert on portrait shots either but i can imagine on one hand a fine art buff huffing and puffing away about black and white but if a National Geographic photographer had captured this then the treatment would have been the same as yours, in the magazine, and with that same focus on the eyes.

Excellent portrait. I was drawn to it immediately. The eyes are captured beautifully and are the main focal point for the viewer. The natural light gives the portrait wonderful depth and play of shadows and highlights. Indeed it may not be perfect for some, and even for you (that is the engine that makes us, artists, do better) but it is a well photographed and presented image. The expression on the face complement the eyes and it does evoke feelings. I think this is quite a compelling and strong image. Well done

Fascinating depth and dynamics

For such a tight framing there is only one really important thing in portraiture and that’s focus on the eyes. You’ve nailed that, so it doesn’t really matter about any other niggling. I’d be very happy with a portrait like this.

Not withstanding you have the most gorgeous and beautiful model and daughter, the image it self is just perfect in my eyes. Using a soft focus mask to soften the skin tones and hide any blemishes (which I doubt that there where any) and leaving the eyes, which are themselves like deep dark inviting pools and can hold the viewers attention alone, pin sharp. I think anyone would be hard pressed to find fault with this image joni. Very well done indeed.

Joni, I don’t know how I missed this stunning portrait, but I’m so happy I found it today. It reminds me of the cover of the National Geographic magazine that featured a young Afghan woman. There was a special TV feature showing how the photographer went back to the country some time after to try to find her, and find her he did. She had that same mysterious air about her, that same penetrating gaze, extraordinary beauty, and of course mesmerizing eyes. Your cover rivals that one; it’s THAT good! Oh, I looked at your book, too. It’s wonderful! Thanks for introducing me to that site.
