Dear Artists,
Can anyone help me?
I am starting to get upset that most of the “ART” I view comes from MACHINES. Cameras. YES, as I said before, I respect a good photographer, but everyone that owns a camera, including myself, this does not an artist make.
Because of this, I occassionally feel resentful that the photos get so much attention and applause, while an original creation gets much less.
How do YOU feel about this? Handle it? Ignore it?
Is it just me? Am I wrong? Or have I been on the computer way too much as hubby just suggested! Ha!
A sincere Thank you to all who respond, whether you agree with me or not.

could not agree more
unfortunetly we live in this techno society where all machine made, cookie cutter style is glorified and applauded and originality and or human hand made creation gets much forgotten and left in the grandmas closet.
sad but true, welcome to brave new world…...
everyone is an artist…..........even the robots they say , if you program them to be….

i agree….same goes with the music today….all computerized…where are the “skiled” these days….i appreciate good potography as well..but there is no comparison to skilled painters, sculptors, musicians, etc,,,,,personally my work is very “heartfelt” emotional and is my “therapy” so to say….agree with u all the way!

You know what? I had a strong suspicion that I might get some agreement on this topic from you both. I needed to hear it. Makes me feel sane and not so alone in this bubble which is going to BURST if we all don’t start getting more choosey about what we call ART.
Shit. I’m still resentful. I am going to have to pray to let this one go…...Thank you for your heartfelt answers. xo joni p

What difference does it make what tools an artist uses to make their art?
In all pieces of art there is a mind and an imagination behind it.
Joni Philbin, 7 months ago
The difference is HAND CRAFTED. I agree, a pottter uses a wheel, pottery is ART.
A furniture maker uses a plane, that is ART.
Weaving, sculpting, to me fit in the category of an ARTIST.
I will repeat again; SOME photographers are worthy of being called an artist, but with technology today….....to me, it is equal to cheating to use all the technology. Using a real camera with real film and developing it yourself, that includes your hands. If it’s great, that’s an artist. Sort of.

So your like the sculpture that spit on the oil painters and said that painting was not art
and then the oil painters spit upon the water colourists and then in turn spat on the photographers and they in turn spit on the computer artists
( Where did I read all this before? On RB someplace by a pretty good writer )
When is this nonsense ever gonna end?
No matter what tools someone uses its still art. The brain , guides the hand that makes the art. No matter what the tools are.
If a world wide know famous photographer uses a cheap toy camera, is it art? Or is it only art when he uses the $5,000 film camera? So if he uses a Digital Camera then he is no longer an artist?

I love all kinds of art. I love paint, ink, everything messy but sometimes I wish I had more techno things like RAM, graphics tablet etc, to give digital art a go. I also get into a bit of photography if I ‘m in the mood. Keep up the great painting Joni!

Art comes in many forms and it takes an artistic talent to capture it…regardless of the way in which captured.

I have always loved using cameras and I have thousands of photos that I am proud of, I think some aren’t quite understanding what I am saying, but thank you all for your feedback. I’m not mad anymore.

You dont have to be mad, the point you have made is a valid one, and has been the subject of many debates and will be again i am sure.
