Independence Day
This was my first stab at photographing fireworks in BULB mode. I used a black card over the lens in between bursts so that multiple explosions were within the same frame. 31 second exposure!

Great job for a 1st attempt using BULB Janet! I’m not sure if I get the black card thing, but outcome looks just great.

Thanks Frank. Using BULB mode keeps the shutter open until I released it so it allows very long exposure. Ideally you want to wait until the bursts of fireworks are in full bloom. In order to get multiple bursts in one frame I had to exclude all of the activity leading up to the fullest display of light. I used the black card in front of the lens while the shutter was open in between the big bursts. While the shutter was open I placed the card over the lens essentially recording black and then I removed the card for a second to record the burst and then quickly put the card back in front of the lens. If I had simply left the shutter open for 30 seconds then everything would be over exposed and the bright colors would desaturate.
