Chris is a South African chef now living in Australia. It took him two years to persuade me to sell his portrait to him.

Some years ago I survived a serious attack on my life. During the year of recovery, I did two drawings and found the activity both calming and exciting.
I am studying under Leon Fourie.
I have simplified my life completely and now paint full time.

Art for me, is an intensely personal expression of how I appreciate and perceive life and people.

I love this Jolante. I’m glad you finally sold it to him :)
Can I ask you why you were reluctant to do so?
    Were you attached to it?

  • Hi Maree, thanks! It is one of my earlier paintings. I was (am) very attached to it because it a) I like it, b) it was hanging in Jopasso Guest House and drew many comments from guests and c) it reminded me of the time he worked in one of the hotels where I consulted. But it is now time to let of it. In the long run, he will appreciate it more.

Yes I am sure he and his family will appreciate it immensely.
I can understand the attachment but at least it went to a good home xox

that’s really a terrific piece, says so much about the hard-working chef and a great intensity here. Glad you sold it, I can see why he would love it. :))

  • Many thanks for your insightful words. It was what I tried to portray.

It’s immediately apparent that the chef is also a whole person with a life, and it’s impressive to see so much included in his expression. That we are not seeing a title with a man to it, and there is no more to him, but we imagine his imaginings. That he was an immigrant too, there is a feeling of ‘I wonder where I am’ in his look and posture. So well done. I too have tackled knitted fingers like that and it’s a breathtaking challenge, you did it well. The floor is great, slippery, great color.

  • Your comments always give me courage to GO and paint Barbara. I need it right now as I am trying slightly more complex work and finding the process discouraging at times. I really appreciate your words!
