From a reference “Protect her,Oh Lord.” by Maree Cardinale
Painted in the Solo Exhibition Portrait Workshop
This is what I learned:
1. When this work was originally posted, it immediately caught my eye. I had to ‘find’ what both Maree and saw; and interpret that.
2. I had to capture her essence although I have never met her, so in a way the HER is what both Maree and I ‘saw’.
3. I had to work to a deadline which taught me a lot about speeding up my internal processes.
4. I had to learn to paint with purples, I don’t like the colour but the subject demanded those colours.
5. I tried to paint her story without knowing what it was; but what I imagined.

Some years ago I survived a serious attack on my life. During the year of recovery, I did two drawings and found the activity both calming and exciting.
I am studying under Leon Fourie.
I have simplified my life completely and now paint full time.

Art for me, is an intensely personal expression of how I appreciate and perceive life and people.

I’ve been studying it with awe.
You have painted her, HER. This is really her.
    Amazing work.
    I feel somewhat humbled.
Thank you so very much Jolante.
I wish I had more words to describe the impact this has made on me.
    She’s beautiful.

  • HI Maree, this was a new challenge for me in many ways: 1. I had to find what you and I both see in her and interpret that. 2. I had to capture her essence although I have never met her, so in a way the HER is what both of us saw. 3. I had to work to a deadline which taught me a lot about speeding up my internal processes. 4. I had to learn to paint with purples, I don’t like the colour but she demanded those colours. 5. I tried to paint her story without knowing what it was, but what I imagined.
Thank you for being with me in the process; I feel as if I have a new friend!
