Stream the Scheene flows through the nature area the Rottige Meenthe on the border of Friesland and Overijssel provinces of The Netherlands, Europa

The area of the Rottige Meenthe is Internationally classified as wetland and a protected area of importance for wildlife, flora and fauna by Staatsbosbeheer a Dutch organization founded in 1899 to control and conserve Dutch nature reserves. From the middle ages until mid last century it was an area where making dry peat, this was an important source of income for it’s inhabitants. Although the area looks very natural nowadays, it is largely the result of human activities. Without further human intervention, the area is expected to turn into a wetland forest within approximately 30 years and the unique variable character of the current peatland would soon be lost. Nowadays, due to various interventions, the area has a varied landscape of open water ponds, floating islands of vegetation in former peat holes, fields of reed marshes, wet meadows, and woodlands.
