She asked, “Art thou God?”, when she came through the door.

“No, child, though I’ve watched over from the day you were born.”

“My guardian angel? I thought that nonsense.”

“Your deep intuition, inner voice, a conscience.”

“I needed you. You failed me, but a moment ago.”

“Did you not hear my whisper, ‘Avoid the dark stairs below?’”

“I recall hesitating, but I was so late.”

“For reasons so trivial, now seen from this state.”

“That man took my young life. I question your devotion.”

“But I cannot prevent that which you set in motion.”

“I died all alone. Lost so many years.”

“Was holding your hand, my cheek wet from your tears.”

“Still, before I departed, felt something within.”

“Tell me, my little one, what could that have been?”

“A comforting warmth, was at peace. So odd.”

“It was then that you asked me if I was your God.”
