This remarkable image of a female Buddha is situated on a cliff face by a temple inhabited exclusively by female monks. Wat Wua, Cow Temple, is in a ethnic Shan village, Muang Na, by the Thailand-Myanmar border. The monks with shaved heads wear the saffron robes of their male counterparts. It is very rare to see women wearing anything but white robes signifying their status as ‘nuns’ rather than monks in a Thai temple. Below the image is a meditation cave and monastery.

This is fascinating, John. What a lovely & compelling image! I’ve taken a quick look on the internet but can’t find anything further about this place. Any suggestions?

  • The full name is Wat Ananda Tham Wua, which seems to be related to a temple in Singapore, but not to the Tham Wua temple in Mae Hong Son near where i live. Best way to see it is hop on a plane….
