The Shan people in northwest Thailand call this wet-season beetle “golden tortoise” for obvious reasons. Its extraordinary transparent shell opens in the middle when it takes flight. When I found this beauty in my garden on eggplant bushes, I had to follow it around as it flew from bush to bush before I could take a clear shot. It is a member of the Chrysomelidae family and is possibly Cassida circumdata. The circum sounds right.
