Snails are so common in my garden in far northwest Thailand that it is easy to overlook the extraordinary beauty of their shells. The surrounding limestone mountains are home to countless unnamed species of land snails that are distant cousins of marine species. Distinct species have been found on rock outcrops that are within a few hundred metres of each other. The caves in my district are home to scores of newly named species of micro snails, the size of pinheads.

I am an Australian expat living in the hills of Mae Hong Son province Thailand (please visit cavelodge.com). I photograph almost everything, above and below ground.

Perfect photo well done John :)

  • Thanks Flavia. Taking macro bug shots is a very new undertaking for me and I am enjoying it immensely. Snails are much cuter than i had ever realised.
