A Burmese girl, with baby brother secured in a sarong on her back, brings a gift of flowers to a passing tourist in her village near Inle Lake, Shan State, Burma. Tannakha, a make up and sunscreen made from tree bark, plasters her face. As I strolled around her village, several children emerged from their houses with flowers and smiles that could melt anyones heart. I previously uploaded another image of this gorgeous girl, but when I found this one, I couldn’t resist sharing it. Taken in 1984 on kodachrome slide film.

I am an Australian expat living in the hills of Mae Hong Son province Thailand (please visit cavelodge.com). I photograph almost everything, above and below ground.

Colours are all so fresh. Smile so genuine. Hope and trust she’s still a happy person.

  • It was a genuinely beautiful gesture, and I would imagine life is good for her. Unless people in Burma live in minority army influenced areas or are actively involved in anti-government politics, then the regime tends to leave them alone. And in her case the area is very fertile, and the villagers are able to eke out a comfortable existence despite the lack of government assistance.

She is really lovely, wonder how her life turned out.

  • Probably Ok….she looks like a very happy, confident child. The people around the lake didn’t seem to be persecuted by the Burmese army as the people living in areas with lots of rebel activity are.
