Hilltribe children in the mountains of northern Thailand have few toys to play with and make-do with simple home-made things like this brakeless go-kart. Fearless, they hurtle down the slopes of their village, leaning into corners, using their bare feet to brake. After a few runs the excitement still shines in his eyes. Taken with a Nikon FM2, 28mm lense, kodachrome slide film, in 1979, Ban Huay Hea, a remote Black Lahu village near the Thai-Burma border.

I am an Australian expat living in the hills of Mae Hong Son province Thailand (please visit cavelodge.com). I photograph almost everything, above and below ground.

    Yes. The enthusiasm is obvious.

  • Have you seen my ‘village and go-kart’ photo? It is his downhill run, adds a bit more to this picture.

He looks like the adrenaline is still flowing, sheer joy!

  • I imagine that ricketty contraption on a steep rough slope would get you well pumped up
