Muzzle-loader by John Spies
Clear

A Black Lahu man fires his muzzle-loading rifle to celebrate the establishment of a new village. They pack gunpowder and shot into the muzzles of these homemade hunting rifles and ignite it with a hammer and cap.The blast is deafening. In the background a man places a long bamboo and gourd pipe, the sound of which can reach their diety, who likes to see the villagers making noise and enjoying themselves. Taken in a remote mountainous area in the early 1980s in Mae Hong Son province Thailand.

I am an Australian expat living in the hills of Mae Hong Son province Thailand (please visit cavelodge.com). I photograph almost everything, above and below ground.

The look of the young lad on the left is just priceless!

  • they are bloody loud, and dangerous those things. Notice the man firing is looking the other way…sometimes they backfire- once had to clean a nasty wound to a young Black Lahu..a hunk of wood had sunk (through the skull!) into his forehead, after the stock had shattered. I gave him a course of antibiotics, and he survived, with a great scar…
