In Shan, the edible parts of this plant that sprouts in tight bunches from the ground is called ‘mak dap pue’. ‘Pue’ is a malicious spirit that can possess people and turn them crazy. The cure is to place a blackened pot over the victim’s head and scape the soot off. The plant can be eaten raw with chillie paste, and it tastes delicious.
