Baby carrier

Baby carrier

A Mien woman carries her baby on her back, secure in an exquisitely embroidered baby carrier. Mien women are masters of cross-stitch embroidery and spend much of their spare time stitching designs on their pants and on baby carriers and caps. Mien or Yao originated in China but over the past few centuries have migrated to Vietnam, Laos and northern Thailand where this photograph was taken. Nikon FM2, kodachrome slide film.

The colors are so striking in this image. Their craftmanships is outstanding, the embroidery so intricate! I love the inquisitie look in the baby’s eye and the loving warmth of his secure environment.

  • John Spies replied

The embroidery of the Mien women is outstanding- they wear long pants that are covered with fine cross-stitch, each pair taking months to make.

John, this is an exquisite picture and I love the look on this child’s eyes! BTW, I’m Mien and this was how I was carried as a child.

  • John Spies replied

Wow, how cool, what a pleasure to get a comment from you, a Mien. I have wonderful memories of traditional Mien hospitality and ceremonies, and spent many great nights with special people. The Mien were the most gracious and sophisticated of all the hill people I had the pleasure of knowing.

What an amazing photograph – you have captured the soul of this beautiful child, the colorful and intricate handiwork of her people, the kindness of her mother, and the beauty of her environment. And even the scantily clad child in the background adds to the overall interest of the piece. Congratulations on a well-deserved feature. Can’t wait to see the book.
