Queenscliff’s famous Black Lighthouse is one of only a handful in the world that are unpainted black stone. It is the only black lighthouse in the Southern Hemisphere.
Also know as the High Lighthouse it is located inside the historic Fort Queenscliff guarding the entrance to Port Phillip Bay. Victoria. Australia.
The black lighthouse was built in 1862 in conjunction with the White (Low) Lighthouse and therefore had many similarities in design.
Fort Queenscliff was built around the light after fears that ships carrying gold from the gold rush may be attacked by privateers.
The lamps and housings were manufactured by Chance Brothers in England.

    great capture, and information.

  • Hi bazcelt. Thanks for the visit and the Favourite. One of our local lighthouses with a lot of history. As it is inside the Fort’s walls, I had to try a different angle. Thanks again.

One word to describe this. Simply BEAUTIFUL. I like the right-up too. Quite interesting.

  • Hi Hany. Thanks for the visit and you compliment. This is a local lighthouse which is housed inside a Fort, so I was trying to capture it from a different view.

  • Hi Forget-me-not. Thanks for the visit and the Favourite. This was taken at the old coastal town of Queenscliff. This lighthouse sits above the golden sandstone inside an old fort.
