Hanging Rock is a long-extinct volcano, formed when lava blew through a vent in the earth about 6 million years ago, and now rises , 105 metres on the surrounding plain. High soda content in the solid lava and the action of rainwater has created the unusual rock formations, known to geologists as soda trachyte. ’
It is home of the Hanging Rock Cup & Races, and setting of the world renown novel & film Picnic at Hanging Rock. It is also home to various events and a wide array of native flora and fauna.
