BRIDGE OF FEARS (poem)

I’m standing alone on this bridge made of fearsBehind lies the past – in front what’s to comeAs I look from the middle at our moral arrearsI seek for a sight of some help but there’s none!I turn once again to look at what’s beenAnd I see the young boy that I was long agoI recall when this bridge was a beautiful dreamWhen it felt safe to look down at the river below! Those times were sweet, I’m glad they were mineTimes when I saw only good in the worldInnocent hopes in a world that seemed fineBefore the cruel flag of despair was unfurled! This was a bridge that felt solid back thenBut it’s aged with me – doesn’t feel safe anymoreI know that innocence can’t be returned to againSo from this Bridge of Fears I must learn how to soar!John Lakefield
