Introducing leggings. You’ll never run out of inspiration.

Anas platyrhynchos: Canon 7D, EF 400mm f5.6 L, ISO 250, AV: 1/2000 sec, f5.6, -2/3EV

The Mallards on the stretch of the Deschutes River flowing through Bend, Oregon are quite acclimated to humans. (This doesn’t mean they are tame. The same ducks in a different locale could prove to be unapproachable.) Because it is so easy for a photographer to get up close and personal, they provide a great opportunity to practice composition, pov, and finding ideal light. I prefer, however, to use them to improve my instinctive reflexes for flight photography. This prepares me for the missile-like flyers such as Mergansers, Buffleheads, and Goldeneyes.

As a HS teacher I conducted an annual ornithology class where I took students on field trips to places like the Lower Klamath NWR. Upon retirement I took up bird photography after reading Arthur Morris’s book The Art of Bird Photography. Currently, I have been strongly influenced by the work of landscape and HDR photographers like Robert Rodriguez Jr. and Trey Ratcliff.
