American Wigeon Drake: Reflections in Mirror Pond by

American Wigeon: Anas americana
When these dabbling ducks are bottom feeding together in large numbers they inadvertently disturb little fingerling fish and crawdads lingering in the aquatic plants. This attracts the diving ducks like mergansers who sometimes get into a feeding frenzy amidst large flocks of Mallards and Wigeons. This symbiotic activity can provide a wonderful opportunity for a photographer to get close.

As a HS teacher I conducted an annual ornithology class where I took students on field trips to places like the Lower Klamath NWR. Upon retirement I took up bird photography after reading Arthur Morris’s book The Art of Bird Photography. Currently, I have been strongly influenced by the work of Sindri Skulason and other Icelandic photographers.
