The dinosaur awakes: new growth on a Wollemi Pine

The discovery in 1994 of the Wollemi Pine (Wollemia nobilis), one of the world’s oldest and rarest plants, was described at the time as “the equivalent of finding a small dinosaur still alive on earth.” Now safely propagated and its future assured (this one lives in a pot in a Sydney backyard), the location of that original find, in a remote area of a national park, is still a closely guarded secret.

The dinosaur awakes: new growth on a Wollemi Pine belongs to the following groups:

Excellent, I love the Bokeh. If that’s a recent photo, with the sunlight streaming through the plants I want to go there right now. Lovely.

  • John Peel replied

That’s very kind, David. Taken this morning, with plumbago in the background (sorry, but it is our turn…!)

Nicely done recording this significant plant

  • John Peel replied

Thankyou, Alan. My own specimen, after about three years, is now almost 1.5 metres high. I’m told they grow about half a metre a year and can reach 20 metres in height.Even if it breaks through the bottom of its pot, dealing with the neighbours will therefore not be my problem…
