John P. Broderick
I would like to think that my art is about seeing – not just with my eyes and camera, but also with pencil, pen, and brush. Based on plein air sketches and photographs from every-day life and from my travels, my paintings explore the interplay of light with natural and architectural form.
From my first art course in college throughout my years as a professor of linguistics, I have sought opportunities to refine my drawing skills, and learn ever more about the relationship between form and function in both language and art. Since retiring, I have worked more with color (in oil, acrylic, and especially watercolor paintings).
I have learned much from watching my younger daughter blossom into a professional artist and art professor; from painting with two groups of artists in Williamsburg, Virginia; and from helping to teach a course in Watercolor Painting at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail. My paintings have appeared in one-person and group shows in Williamsburg, Smithfield, and Newport News, VA.
